I remember being a teenager, and just being so awkward – like many of us feel during that interim timeframe between childhood and young adulthood. I don’t know what it is that has changed in this world, but young ladies turning 16 these days are just so graceful and poised. When mom reached out to me about sweet 16 photos for her daughter, I was so excited to be able to create something for her.
Often the most important part of the sweet 16 is the amazing gown that will be worn during the party and ceremony. Naturally, the gown is a huge deciding factor in how the portraits will be styled. But in our conversation, mom had mentioned that her daughter’s favorite color was blue, and that the party’s theme was of a starry, celestial night. Immediately I got to work planning how we could add subtle nods to this theme. I don’t photography overly thematic sessions – my reason is that timeless portraits always have a place in your home as a piece of art.
Planning the session
Out of the wardrobe came a starry tulle robe dress that I thought we could incorporate, and a rhinestone headpiece and crown. I bought this gorgeous new backdrop from Babydream Backdrops to add some more dimension to her portraits, so we didn’t solely rely on solid blue. The subtle watercolor neutrals of the florals perfectly tied in to Victoria’s skin tone, and the starry robe. The day of, Victoria showed up with her mom, sister, and aunt as her support. They were amazing.
Halfway through her aunt asked me if I had a star related backdrop. I told her I could do one better and pulled out this maternity robe and styled it to fit her. They all loved it, and one of these images made it onto a gorgeous 24×36 canvas wall piece that will be displayed at the party. Victoria was stunning, graceful, and gracious, and I was honored to create these for her.
One of two of mom’s pride and joy, this is Victoria.
Why schedule Sweet 16 Portraits?
What we have traditionally looked at as a “coming of age” celebration in our culture, can often come at a time when teenagers are feeling less than confident. Society, peer pressure, and “beauty standards” can often make a young person feel many things. Overwhelmed, anxious, lack confidence, and the worst – criticize themselves over every part of their being. A custom portrait session for a teenager can bring out their inner confidence, grace, and make them feel like a literal queen (or king). A wonderful confidence booster, indeed.
To add, you don’t have to have a party to schedule a fine art photo session for your teen. These can be planned at any time, and any age – regardless of whether you are having a sweet 16 celebration or not!
When to schedule:
Ideally to ensure time between the photo session and a ceremony or party you would like the images displayed at, the session should take place about 2 months prior to the event.
