I do a lot of bold color in my maternity and newborn sessions. When the neutral-minded moms inquire, they tend to be a little bit timid with their session planning requests. I get the “I’m boring, I like neutrals” statement, which couldn’t be further from the truth! A neutral maternity session is timeless, and we can create something beautiful personalized to you, regardless of the color.
Mom had picked out a few looks from our collection, and had mentioned farmhouse style in her home. In some of her inspiration images, I noticed some of those frothy pampas grasses, which she also asked about. I didn’t have any on hand, so I went and purchased some to create a little vignette. I also incorporated a bit of this detail in a digital overlay in one of her images to give more variety as well.
Because they are expecting a boy, we balanced out the neutrals with a little bit of baby blue. We also made it more feminine for her with a touch of floral detailing. Even though a lot of moms do book me for more of the fluffy, glamorous gowns, I truly do love some of the more simple styling that can be achieved with just draped fabrics, or silhouettes.
I’d also like to point out how important it is to have community over competition in this industry. This lovely family was referred to me by a wedding photographer who doesn’t specialize in maternity or newborn sessions. It is always a good idea to have a network of photographers and friends who you can refer clients to if they inquire about certain types of sessions that you don’t do, or aren’t available for. I can’t wait to return the favor!

Funny story though. I kept calling the husband by the other photographer’s name, which was so embarrassing for me. (He was also quick to point out that they do look alike and get could be brothers LOL!) This is not normal for me as I am generally very good with names and remember clients from 10plus years ago! I must have been having an off day.
