One of the greatest joys of being a family photographer is watching a family’s story continue from one session to the next. I first photographed this beautiful family during Mom’s maternity session, where we created an elegant collection of portraits in soft, romantic shades of neutral pink, lavender, and purple. When they returned to the studio to welcome their baby girl, we carried that same color palette into her newborn portraits — creating a beautiful visual connection between the images of pregnancy and the portraits celebrating her arrival.
But this session was about much more than pretty colors. It was about incorporating the little pieces that make this family them.
As avid sports fans, we started with something especially meaningful to Dad: Phillies gear. The goal was to create some fun, personality-filled portraits that could eventually become artwork for Dad’s man cave. And honestly, how adorable are these little ones in their Phillies gear? Big sister looked completely at home in hers, while baby girl was wrapped in coordinating shades to bring the entire set together.
I have a feeling these may end up being some of their favorite images — and that is exactly what I love about personalizing newborn sessions. The most meaningful portraits aren’t always the ones that look the most traditional. Sometimes, they are the ones that capture the things your family genuinely loves.
For their more formal family portraits, we kept Mom’s styling simple and timeless, while bringing back another beautiful detail from her maternity session: the star pattern she had worn while expecting her baby girl. This time, that pattern became a dress for her oldest daughter, who was absolutely thrilled to put on something sparkly and, in her own words, “princess-y.” Her excitement was completely contagious, and she was clearly ready to embrace her starring role.
And then came one of my favorite details of the entire session.
We incorporated something from Mom’s own history as a ballerina — her original point shoes — and paired them with a sweet little tutu outfit for her new baby girl. There was something incredibly special about seeing those tiny newborn feet alongside a piece of her mother’s past. A little girl who is just beginning her own story, surrounded by the things her parents have loved throughout theirs.
Perhaps a future ballerina herself?
Whether she follows in Mom’s footsteps or finds an entirely different passion of her own, these portraits will always preserve the connection between them.
And thankfully, baby girl was an absolute dream for her solo portraits. She was content through practically anything we wanted to do, allowing us to create a beautiful variety of images in those soft pink, purple, and neutral tones. From her delicate newborn details to her sweet expressions, she made the entire process wonderfully easy.
What I love most about this session is how naturally both parents’ passions found their way into their portraits — from Dad’s love of the Phillies to Mom’s history as a ballerina — all surrounding this brand-new little person who is now becoming part of their shared family story.
These are the newborn sessions I love creating most: beautiful, timeless portraits that are also deeply personal. Because years from now, when baby girl is no longer tiny enough to fit into that tutu, these photographs will still tell her something about where she came from, what her parents loved, and how completely celebrated she was from the very beginning.
