Some family photographs are about capturing a moment. Others feel like they are capturing an entire legacy. This beautiful multigenerational family session was a celebration of both—a wonderful blend of the past, present, and future, all gathered together to celebrate their dad’s 80th birthday.
Liz lovingly reached out to me to plan an extended family photography session in honor of her husband’s 80th birthday. With their three adult sons, their spouses, and their grandchildren all coming together, this was so much more than a family portrait session. It was an opportunity to pause and celebrate the family they had built together and the generations that will carry that love forward.
From the beginning, Liz knew exactly what mattered most to her. She wanted photographs with her husband surrounded by the layers of their family—holding their grandchildren close, standing alongside their sons, and documenting their connection as it is today.

She even thoughtfully purchased matching dresses for her granddaughters, who were absolute dolls and looked as though they had been made for this moment. Their little personalities came through beautifully, while their grandsons brought their own unique personalities and plenty of cool factor to their portraits. Together, the grandchildren created such a wonderful mix of sweetness, character, and energy.
The bond between the siblings was equally special to witness. There is something uniquely meaningful about seeing grown brothers together with their own families, still connected by the same history while creating lives and families of their own. And then there was the tiniest member of the family—a wonderfully chunky little bundle of calm and joy who was perfectly content to be cuddled and loved by everyone around him.

One of Liz’s requests was particularly special: a portrait of herself and her husband surrounded by all of her grandchildren, with their parents looking on in the background. It became one of our favorite images from the entire session. There is something incredibly powerful about seeing the generations together in a single frame—the grandparents who started it all, at the heart. Their grandchildren gathered around them, and the parents who will continue carrying this family story forward.
Of course, the stunning group family portrait was a highlight as well. Everyone together, looking toward the camera, captured in one beautiful frame—it was absolute perfection and such a wonderful reflection of the joy this family shares.
And of course, this session wouldn’t be complete without a portrait of Liz and her husband, beaming in their own right, together. After 80 years of life and a lifetime of memories made side by side, this image felt like the perfect punctuation mark on their story.
Because ultimately, an extended family session is about more than getting everyone in the same photograph. It is about preserving the connections between generations—the people who came before, the family growing today, and the little ones who will carry these memories with them into the future.
What a beautiful way to celebrate 80 years, a marriage, a family, and a life truly well lived together. Thank you for choosing me to capture this moment for you.
