There is something especially meaningful about welcoming returning clients back into the studio—particularly when a few years have passed between babies. I love seeing the little ones I photographed as babies grow into their own personalities, and then having the opportunity to meet the newest addition to their family. It always feels a little like picking up a story where we left off.
This sweet family returned with their charismatic four-year-old son and their brand-new baby girl, and it was such a pleasure to see them again. Naturally, we spent some time comparing babies—how they look, how they sleep, their little personalities, and, of course, how differently each newborn session unfolds. This tiny girl was no exception. She was absolutely adorable and, from the moment we met her, reminded us so much of her big brother!
Mom also wanted to create a beautiful visual connection between her maternity and newborn sessions. For her maternity portraits, we had worked with a palette of yellow, lavender, and pink, so we carried those same colors into the newborn session. The result was a cohesive collection that feels connected from one chapter to the next, while still giving baby girl a look all her own.
Big brother was absolutely smitten with his baby sister. At four years old, he brought plenty of personality and charisma to the session, but when it came to his sister, his attention softened into something incredibly sweet. The portraits captured that early bond so beautifully—the excitement of being a big brother and the tenderness of having this tiny new person to love.
We also incorporated several meaningful details that connected baby girl’s portraits to her brother’s newborn gallery from a few years ago. One of my favorite touches was using the same moon prop for both babies, creating a subtle visual thread between their sessions. We also recreated a lying-down portrait with Mom, this time in pink, to mirror a similar image from her son’s session in blue. These little details may seem simple, but years from now, they will make those side-by-side photographs even more special.
One of the most sentimental elements of the session came from a very personal gift. Baby girl’s great-aunt lovingly hand-knitted several little dresses especially for her. We incorporated two of these beautiful pieces into her portraits, turning something handmade into part of her first photographs. There is something so wonderful about a garment created stitch by stitch with a particular baby in mind. These aren’t simply outfits—they are keepsakes filled with love and family history.
From the familiar colors to the shared props, handmade dresses, and sweet sibling portraits, this session was filled with connections between past and present.
It is one of the greatest privileges of being a newborn photographer to watch families return and grow. To photograph one baby, then meet their sibling years later, and create images that allow the two galleries to live side by side is truly special.
Welcome to the family, sweet girl. Your big brother already has you completely adored—and I have a feeling this is only the beginning of a beautiful story together.
