There is something truly meaningful about photographing a family not just once, but over the course of years. This First Holy Communion session for a beloved returning family felt especially significant, as it marked the second daughter stepping into a moment we first documented 5 years ago for her older sister.
I have had the honor of photographing this family since big sister—now 13 and almost as many inches taller than me—was just a newborn. They have been with me almost as long as I’ve been in business, and that kind of loyalty is never lost on me. There is a quiet trust that builds over time, an ease in the way we work together, and a shared understanding of just how important it is to preserve these fleeting seasons.
For this Communion session, we chose to photograph in the studio, allowing for a controlled, refined environment and flexibility that weather simply cannot guarantee. While her older sister’s Communion portraits were taken outdoors, this setting gave us the opportunity to create something equally timeless, while still honoring the visual continuity this family cherishes.
One of the most special elements of this session was the intentional recreation of select poses from her sister’s Communion portraits. Per mom’s request, these images were created so that both girls’ portraits can live side by side in their home. It’s a detail that speaks volumes about the care this family puts into preserving their memories, not just individually, but as a collective story of both their girls.

Sisterhood, admiration, and love
We also created updated portraits of the sisters together, again something we created the first time around with her sister’s communion in matching pink dresses. Seeing those images come to life again, now with more maturity, deeper connection, and evolving personalities, was incredibly moving. It is a visual timeline of sisterhood—one that continues to grow more meaningful for them with each passing year.
In one of the sweetest personal touches, little sister chose to incorporate her sister’s prayer book and shoes into her own Communion look. It was entirely her decision, a heartfelt nod to the admiration she holds for her big sister. These are the kinds of details that can’t be staged.
Over the years, I’ve also had the privilege of photographing many members of their extended family, capturing milestones big and small. Being invited back time and time again is something I hold with immense gratitude. It is never just about the images—it is about the relationships, the history, and the trust placed in me to document it all with care.
This session was not just about a First Holy Communion. It was about individual moments, connection, and the beauty of watching a family’s story unfold—one memory at a time.
