One Year with the Canon EOS R5: A Game Changer for Maternity & Newborn Photography
It’s officially been a year since I switched to the Canon EOS R5, and I can confidently say—this camera has completely elevated my work. As a maternity and newborn photographer, capturing soft, emotional, fleeting moments is everything. The R5 has not only met but exceeded my expectations in every way.
The image quality is stunning. The 45MP resolution gives me all the detail I need, especially for large prints that parents cherish for a lifetime. And the color science—classic Canon magic—renders skin tones beautifully, which is so important when photographing babies and glowing mamas.
One of the biggest wins for me has been the eye-detection autofocus. It locks in flawlessly, even when I’m shooting with wide apertures and a wiggly newborn or an expectant mother moving through natural poses. Some other features I like includes its multi exposure/shot, and bluetooth capabilities. If I’m in a tricky spot where I don’t have an assistant and need to throw some fabric, I can set the multi shot feature with the number of shots I need and the interval time, and just go! You can see an example of this in-use in the image below.
Although I’ve started investing in RF lenses, I still use my trusty EF 24-70mm and 50mm with the Canon adapter—and honestly, they perform just as beautifully on this body. The transition has been smooth, and it’s reassuring to know my favorite glass is still fully usable.
I also love how intuitive and responsive the R5 feels in my hands. When you’re working with delicate subjects in a peaceful, intimate setting, your gear needs to be fast, quiet, and reliable. The R5 delivers.
Looking back on this year, I can’t imagine going back. This camera has been a complete game-changer and helped me create some of my most heartfelt work to date.
