This moment was about documenting in style as a family of four prepares to become a family of five. For this sweet family, their maternity session was filled with everything that makes this moment so special: softness, anticipation, laughter, and a whole lot of personality.
Mom gravitated toward a palette of soft pinks, lavender, and cream, creating an elegant and romantic feel throughout the session. But while the colors brought the softness, it was her children who brought the energy—and they were an absolute joy to photograph.
Their personalities truly came alive in front of the camera, especially when they joined Mom for some of the more playful images. They were completely willing to jump in, laugh, move, and even toss fabric for us. And let me just say, they may have a future career in dramatic fabric tossing! Their professional-level results in the lavender images speak for themselves.
Those photographs are some of my favorites because you can see Mom’s pure joy so clearly. Between the laughter, the movement, and her children’s exuberance, these images capture something that can’t be posed: the happiness of being their mom and the anticipation of welcoming one more little girl into their family.
The importance of maternity wardrobe
Of course, we couldn’t resist adding a little drama to the session, too. Mom stepped into a striking black, figure-hugging mermaid gown and we paired it with a bold green backdrop. The contrast was unexpected and gorgeous, creating a completely different mood for her portraits with Dad. It was a beautiful reminder that maternity photography can be both romantic and refined while still allowing a mother to feel powerful and glamorous.
We finished the session with several newer pieces from the studio wardrobe, and these unexpected looks quickly became some of Mom’s favorites. A pearl cape crop top paired with a sleek black skirt brought a touch of modern elegance. A sheer petal bustier with a dramatic wide-brim white hat felt editorial and fashion-forward, while a sheer floral beige look photographed beautifully against a clean white backdrop.
I love when a session evolves this way—beginning with the soft, romantic colors a mother is naturally drawn to, then exploring something bolder, more unexpected, and that becomes completely her own.
Most of all, this session captured a family exactly as they are in this moment: four becoming five, full of laughter, love, personality, and anticipation for their newest little girl. These are the moments that make maternity portraits so meaningful—not simply photographs of a beautiful pregnancy, but a glimpse into the family story just before it changes forever.
