A love letter to grandma
Mother’s Day sessions hold a quiet significance—an opportunity to honor not only the role of motherhood, but the legacy of women who shape a family across generations. This particular session was thoughtfully planned in advance. Mom and Grandma visited the studio in the weeks prior to curate a wardrobe that would reflect mom’s desired vision. Together, we selected a series of looks that would allow us to create four distinct visual narratives, each capturing a different facet of their connection.
We began with a refined, black and white set—a softly draped backdrop, delicate chandeliers, and subtle black bows for a hint of sophistication. In matching back-tie outfits, at the center of it all was Grandma, poised and serene. Surrounded by her daughter and grandchildren, she became the anchor of the image.
From there, we transitioned into a more romantic setting. Layers of neutral fabrics, soft floral tones, and flowing gowns created an ethereal softness. The palette was gentle and feminine, allowing the connections between mother, her children, and grandmother to take center stage. There is a tenderness in these images—the soft looks, the adoring big brother looking at his sister, and honest smiles showing a much deeper love.
Within this portion of the session, we intentionally carved out time for a few solo portraits of mom. Too often, women exist only in relation to others—seen as mothers, daughters, partners—but rarely as themselves. These solo portraits offered her a moment of pause, a chance to be celebrated.

The playful side of motherhood
To close the session, we embraced a completely different energy—one that reflected the playful, modern side of motherhood. Swapping gowns for denim and sneakers, the family stepped into a relaxed, contemporary set against a clean white seamless backdrop. With minimal styling and an emphasis on movement and interaction, this portion of the session allowed personalities to shine. Laughter came easily, the children settled into themselves, and the dynamic between Mom and her little ones felt effortless and real.
These final portraits carry a different kind of beauty—less formal, yet equally meaningful. They capture the joy, spontaneity, and everyday magic of motherhood, balancing the more polished, heirloom imagery created earlier in the day.
Together, these distinct looks tell a complete story. One of elegance and legacy, of softness and strength, of individuality and connection. A celebration of love between three generations. We often push photos aside, waiting for a better moment – but the best moment is now. Those with aging parents or the blessing of having grandparents in their children’s lives feel this deeply. We are not granted tomorrow, make sure to capture these memories today.
