April and May are always months about celebrating motherhood. Although celebrating moms should be a year round, dateless thing, it is during these months, in anticipation of mother’s day that I find myself creating many portraits for moms and their babies.
April and May have a way of gently turning our focus back to motherhood. While it deserves to be honored in the quiet, everyday moments all year long, there is something about this season—just ahead of Mother’s Day—that invites us to pause and preserve it. In the studio, it becomes a time filled with mothers and their little ones, leaning into the fleeting moments of where they are right now.
This particular session felt especially meaningful, not just for what we created, but for everything that came before it. I first met this mama during her very first maternity session, when her journey into motherhood was still just beginning. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of documenting her story as it unfolded. Tiny newborn fingers, first birthdays, holiday traditions, and all the in-between moments that quietly shape a family. Watching her step more fully into motherhood each time, now surrounded by her two boys, has been something truly special to witness.
Mother and son moments
There is a certain tenderness that comes with photographing a mother and her sons. As a boy mom myself, I recognize the energy, the affection, and the unspoken bond that exists in those spaces. It’s soft but strong, playful yet deeply emotional. That familiarity always brings an added layer of connection to sessions like this—especially when it’s with a family I’ve known and worked with for so long.
For this session, we leaned into a romantic, aesthetic especially for moms. Flowing drapery, delicate florals, and classic nude tones created an atmosphere that felt both feminine, yet neutral. The softness of the set allowed their connection to take center stage—gentle embraces, quiet cuddles, and the natural rhythm between a mother and her children. Dad stepped in for a few frames as well, adding another layer to their photos.
Sessions like this are a reminder that motherhood is not made up of a single milestone, but a collection of moments woven together over time. To be invited back, year after year, to document those chapters as they unfold—it’s something I always hold dear.
