Taking maternity photos in Portugal has always been such a dream of mine. When I found out my younger cousin was pregnant, I immediately had a vision of capturing her in a special place for our family. Being from the north of Portugal, my childhood memories included many a mountainous drive between my grandparents’ homes. I remember climbing the boulders in flip flops on the side of the road, these particular chapel ruins, and the views down to the valley below. One side facing the village my grandfather was born in, and the other, where they lived in their little house surrounded by orange trees.
When my grandfather passed away, I saw a rainbow the day of his funeral. On the drive up the mountains, even though it was a sunny afternoon, a rainbow followed us on the 45 minute drive, and lingered there just beyond the highest boulders for quite a bit. I am not a big believer in signs, but this one has always stuck with me. That little rainbow fragment stayed with us a while as we photographed my cousin with my grandfather’s village in the far far background.
I thought red would be a perfect color amidst the grey brown boulders, misty mountains, and grasses, so I brought this fabulous gown with me for her photos. It was indeed, perfect.

Sessao Fotografica de Gravida – Portugal
Sempre sonhei em fazer uma sessão de fotos de gravidez em Portugal. Quando soube que a minha prima estava grávida durante a altura em que lá estaria, imediatamente tive uma visão de como a fotografar. Escolhi um lugar com significado para a nossa família. Um lugar entre os montes, onde passei muitas vezes em criança. Um lugar entre o local onde o meu avô nasceu, e onde viveu com a minha avó.
Toda a minha vida cruzei este caminho montanhoso, da casa dos avós maternos até à dos paternos. Por vezes, a estrada passava até acima das nuvens, e passávamos entre elas na descida para a casa dos meus avós. Lembro-me de trepar as rochas em chinelinho; as vistas para o vale do lado da capela, e a terra onde o meu avô nasceu do outro.
Quando o meu avô faleceu, na manhã do funeral vi um arco-íris. Nos 45 minutos em que conduzíamos na direção do monte, seguia-nos um arco-íris, apesar de ser uma tarde solarenga. Esse pequeno arco-íris manteve-se acima das rochas algum tempo enquanto tirávamos fotos, na direção da terrinha do meu avô. Um sinal talvez, que continuaria sempre connosco.
Desde o início que esta ideia se formou na minha mente, achei que o vermelho seria a cor perfeita para destacar nos tons subtis do monte. E perfeito ficou, nesta grávida deslumbrante.
